Course objectives:
|
The aim of the course is to introduce the work of important medieval and modern scientists, scholars, clergy, historians, writers, philosophers especially in the context of Islamic civilization. Important role in the course plays independent work od students and students presentations.
|
Requirements on student
|
Students know well the general history and geography of the region, they also have basic knowledge of various disciplines in arts, linguistics, medicine, natural sciences etc. They are able to work independently with sources and to present results of their study using multimedia applications. The course ends by credit. Students have to contribute by their papers to the seminars and to be active in final discussion.

Content
|
Presentations will focus on various important figures of science and their work in areas of social sciences and humanities, natural sciences, Islamic sciences, falsafy and medicine.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge - knowledge resulting from the course: |
Students know the most important figures and inventions related to the origins of scientific thinking and research. They are well informed about Mesopotamian and Egyptian astronomy, theories of Alexandrian school, science of classical Greece, inventions in mathematics, medicine and techniques. They have good orientation in all key sciences in the frame of Islamic culture. They can list its most important representatives and to evaluate their works as well as influence. They are able to identify links between scientific thinking of ancient and medieval Middle East and modern Euro Atlantic civilisation. |
